Mitzvah Village

In Mitzvah Village you have the ability to try a wide variety of projects from cooking, to sewing, to  making cards for seniors.  You can spend your time at one project, or wander around to over 14 different projects.  All of the projects are fun and perfect for ages 9-99!  Some projects include:

African Center for Refugees Hygiene Drive - Assemble welcome or toilet kits; make a note for enclosure into the box.

Jewish Family Service Spanish Rice - Bag rice and ingredients to prepare Spanish Rice packets to be donated to JFS.

Project Linus - Cut fleece and knot ends to create polar fleece blankets to be donated to local hospitals.


Judi's House Nourishment Program

Mission: Provides dinners for grieving children and families that have lost family members to cancer.

Project Description: Prepare a meal for 40 -60 children and their caregivers as part of the Nourishment Program at Judi's House, before they attend their peer support sessions. Some volunteers will be able to help finish the rest of the meal at Temple on May 15 and deliver and serve it that night.   

Minimum age for participation is 13.


 
 

BLUFF LAKE NATURE CENTER

Mission: Bluff Lake Nature Center is a nonprofit agency that owns and manages a unique urban wildlife refuge and outdoor classroom in northeast Denver.

Project Description: Gardening, site maintenance, trail work.

Minimum age for participation is 8.  Children must participate with an adult.


FAIRMOUNT CEMETERY TEMPLE EMANUEL SECTION CLEANUP

Mission: Fairmount Cemetery houses Temple Emanuel's burial plots.

Project Description: Clean-up Temple Emanuel’s section, involving picking up rocks on the ground and throwing out artificial and dead flowers and other décor that Temple deems inappropriate.

Minimum age for participation is 8.  Children must participate with an adult.


JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE GROUP HOME

Mission: Offers caring, supervised residential living for eight adults with developmental disabilities.

Project Description: Spring clean-up of grounds including planting and getting flower beds ready for planting.

Minimum age for participation is 8.  Children must participate with an adult.


Ekar Farm

Mission: Ekar Farm and Community Gardens is a communal urban farm, inspired by Jewish values.

Project Description: Prepare ground and plant seeds for upcoming growing season at a community garden run by local non-profit producing food for JFS Weinberg Food Pantry, Kavod Senior Living, Metro CareRing, SAME Cafe.

Minimum age for participation is 9.  Children must participate with an adult.


 
 

DENVER HEALTH NEWBORNS IN NEED

Mission: The Newborns in Need campaign collects new baby items, assembles them, and distributes them to those families in need, so their newborn babies get the healthy start they deserve.
Project Description: Hospital tour, assemble warm welcome bags for new babies, stuff activity bags for kids in the emergency department.

Minimum age for participation is 5.   Children must participate with an adult.


SAME CAFE

Mission: It is the intent of SAME Cafe to build a healthy community by providing a basic need of food in a respectful and dignified manner to anyone who walks through the door.

Project Description: Comprehensive kitchen and restaurant cleaning—wear clothes that can get dirty

Minimum Age for participation is 8. One adult per child.


Jewish Family Service Weinberg Food Pantry

Mission: Assists families and individuals facing hunger and food insecurity.

Project Description:

  • Sorting product in the garage
  • Washing bins, containers, shelving, and tables
  • Cleaning refrigerators and shelves
  • Packing meal bags Stocking shelves
  • Breaking down boxes and containers after sorting

**Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes for garage work**

Minimum age for participation is 9.   Children must participate with an adult.


Ronald McDonald House, Denver

Mission: Ronald McDonald House provides comfortable, low-cost housing and daily meal service to out-of-town families of children being treated at area hospitals.

Project Description: Prepare and serve breakfast to guest families.

Minimum age for participation is 13.

Project Description: Prepare and serve breakfast to guest families.

Minimum age for participation is 13.


Reading Partners

Mission: Reading Partners helps children become lifelong readers by empowering communities to provide individualized literacy instruction with measurable results.

Project Description: Volunteers will sort donated books by reading level so that books can be distributed to elementary school students participating in Reading Partners’ literacy tutoring program.

Minimum age for participation is 14.  Children must participate with an adult.
