11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Registration Required: Register at Feldman

Join veteran Denver historian Phil Goodstein for a stroll in and around Emanuel Cemetery. Phil is a Denver native who grew up in the BMH. He is the author of about 30 books on the city and has been conducting tours since the mid-1980s. His latest volume is THE HISTORY OF DENVER'S SCENIC CEMETERIES. He is currently working a sequel that will include the town's Jewish burial spots.

Soon after the arrival of the first Jews in Denver in 1859, the community had to deal with its dead. Initially, the deceased were interred in the Hebrew Cemetery, land that includes what has become the parking garage of Botanic Gardens. By a roundabout way, the city's first congregation, Temple Emanuel, acquired what became Emanuel Cemetery at Fairmount in 1911. Since then, Emanuel Cemetery has been the final resting place of many of Jewish Denver's foremost figures.

This activity will involve a half-mile walk through the cemetery. Wear walking shoes and bring water.
