HaBayit (8th-12th Grade)
Welcome to HaBayit: The Home for Temple Emanuel Teens 8th - 12th Grade
There are four components to our teen program.
- Experiences: These occur weekly throughout the year and are engaging and interactive. Sundays 10:00 to 11:00 AM and Wednesdays 7:00 to 8:15 PM
- Travel: There are three trips in 2023-2024
- 8th - 12th Grade Retreat at Shwayder Camp
- Confirmation (10th Grade) trip to New York City
- 8th - 12th Grade Food Justice Tour.
- Leadership: Madrichim program, Friedman BBYO, Teen Advisory Council, and more
- Volunteer/Social Action: There will be periodic projects for teens to get involved throughout the year.
You must be logged in as a member adult in order to enroll TEENS in HaBayit activities. Learn how to enroll.
Please Note: Before we can confirm your registration we request that you submit the immunization records for your teen. You will receive an email from our Youth Administrator, Molly Smith, about this process.
Experiences
Sunday 10:00 to 11:00 AM, Weekly
8th-12th Grade Madrichim Training: Grow your skills as a teaching assistant.
10th Grade Confirmation: Explore leadership, Jewish values, and grow your Jewish community.
8th-12th Grade Jewish Food Justice: Food deserts, hunger, ethics, social justice, Jewish values and more.
Wednesday 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM, Weekly
8th-12th Grade Metalworking: Explore your inner Jewish artist.
8th-9th Grade Happiness Lab: Meditation, chanting, yoga, musar, and more in this experience you will explore how to de-stress with a Jewish lens.
8th-12th Grade Dungeons & Dragons: Create your character and learn about Jewish values in this campaign.
Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:30 PM, See Dates Below
8th-12th Grade Eitanim: Connects Israeli and Jewish-American teens to Israel through innovation, while building friendships and creating meaningful social connections nationally and locally. The program is based on a project-based learning approach where you get to deal with real-life challenges; while learning skills like research, planning, execution and placing innovation in the center of your solution. In the program you get to be supported by mentors, entrepreneurs and experts in the field.

Travel
8th - 12th Grade Retreat at Shwayder Camp, September 8-9, 2023, $75
10th Grade Confirmation trip to New York City, October 11-15, 2023, $1,000
8th - 12th Grade Food Justice Tour, April 5-7, 2024, $450
Each trip has limited capacity so please sign up early using the link above. If finances are an issue, please speak to Brad Cohen, Director of Youth and Family Learning for additional scholarship assistance.
Madrichim
- For 8th to 12th Grade
- Must enroll in a HaBayit experience on Sunday or Wednesday
- 8th Graders are volunteers; 9th - 12th Graders are paid $11.61 per hour
- Sunday Hours:
- 8:45 to 10:00 AM
- 11:00 to 12:30 PM
Friedman BBYO
Temple Emanuel’s Friedman BBYO Co-ed chapter costs a one-time fee of $180 to join. Please contact Brad Cohen, Director of Youth and Family Learning to learn more.
The HaBayit Team
Brad Cohen is our Director of Youth and Family Learning. Brad is responsible for setting the overall vision of all our Family Engagement and Learning at Temple Emanuel including the Rabbi Steven Foster Early Learning Center, Shwayder Camp, HaBayit: The Home for Temple Emanuel Teens, and Youth Activities. Offerings for All 8-12th Graders
Micro-Grants
We will be offering micro-grants to those who are interested in dreaming up their own programs for their peers. This could look like building community, raising money for a cause, or starting a new initiative at Temple. All programs must receive approval before funds are granted.
Madrichim/Madrichim in Training
Teens interested in taking a leadership role in our Sunday School classrooms can apply to become an integral part of our Religious School Experience. This a paid position for 9th-12th grade. Teens can participate in both HaBayit and the Madrichim Program.
Mensch Mentorship
10th and 11th graders partner with 7th graders to serve as mentors and help bring them into the Jewish community after their B’nai Mitzvah. They will lead team building activities, games, and more.
BBYO
Temple Emanuel has its own BBYO chapter. BBYO is a fantastic way to bond with other Jewish teens, gain leadership experience, and make friends across the world.
